Wayne Township Fire Department

The Wayne Township Fire Department provides Fire, Emergency Medical (EMS), Hazmat and Rescue services for the area west of central Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

The Wayne Township Fire Department received its original state charter on January 27, 1954. Area volunteers had begun taking matters into their own hands long before. In the early part of our century, the city of Indianapolis provided all fire protection to the nine townships inside Marion County and they did it free of charge. In 1935 Indianapolis began charging each township for fire protection. With this money the city would buy a handful of new pumpers and designate them as "Township Engines" to be used exclusively for runs outside of the city limits. The downside to all of this was that township units were often stationed downtown and their response times were so long that more often than not structures would be fully involved be the time they got to the scene.

In the fall of 1999, it was announced that change would once again impact the Fire Department. Wayne Township would become a combination department. Full time firefighters would serve at the stations 24 hours a day with volunteer, part-time members complimenting the remaining crews. The department hired approximately 75 full time people, mostly from its own ranks.

Wayne Township Fire Department is recognized all over the state for the quality training provided to the members and spectacular customer service to their communities. We have seen many new changes in our service over time, but change is to be expected as long as it improves the service we are providing.
