Mission

To work together to promote caring and improve lives in DeKalb County

History
The United Way of DeKalb County, Inc. was originally organized by a small group of community visionaries in 1960. The “DeKalb United Fund for You” raised $49,195 during their first campaign and with those dollars they were able to help support nine agencies including: Wee Haven, YMCA, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Mental Health, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cancer Society and the Heart Association.

Today, the United Way of DeKalb County, Inc. is able to help fund over 35 programs at our 25 Partner Agencies. Last year we raised a total of $683,071.00 during our annual campaign.

One revered founder of the United Way was Ms. Barbara S. Oren. It was through her spirit and tenacity and we have grown to the successful organization that we are today. As one of the four original founders of the United Fund, she was caring, hard-working, generous, willing to help others, and committed to making DeKalb County a better place. Newspaper reports at the time of her death in 1997 described her as a person “whose spirit shined in helping other people.”
