Town of Valle Crucis

History

Nestled high in the mountains of North Carolina is a little known corner of the world called Valle Crucis (pronounced valley crew' sis). First settled over 200 years ago, the Vale of the Cross is a place that historians and visitors alike have called "uncommon." Discover our historic inns and bed and breakfasts, offering a relaxing stay with comfortable lodging and memorable meals in this peaceful valley. Explore the Valle Crucis Conference Center and Holy Cross Episcopal Church, both on the grounds of the historic Mission School in the upper valley. Visit what Charles Kuralt called "a destination," the original Mast General Store. The General Store is now joined by other shops, studios, and galleries throughout the community featuring locally made pottery, rustic furniture, and original art. Locate cabin rentals and horseback riding stables. Find out about activities, camps, and places for retreats for from one to one hundred all here in Valle Crucis. Located in Watauga County near Boone, only hours from the hustle and bustle of the big city, day and weekend getaways are possible, but we are sure you'll return eventually for a much longer stay.

The Valle Crucis Community, North Carolina's First Rural Historic District, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places (Feb 2005). Find out more about the original Mast General Store and Annex, The Mast Farm Inn and several family-run bed and breakfasts, restaurants offering deli food to gourmet, cabin rentals and conference centers, camps and horse stables, shops and galleries, and our historic and beautiful churches.

Named by the Episcopalian missionaries, Valle Crucis (pronounced valley crew' sis) is Latin for "Vale of the Cross." With many sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the history buff will be right at home. Read online histories of the old Episcopal Mission (1842), which is now the Valle Crucis Conference Center, the Mast General Store (1883), The Mast Farm Inn (1812), the Baird House (1790), and the Church of the Holy Cross, also associated with the old Episcopal Mission.

All these historic properties are still very much alive in Valle Crucis.
