History

Route 66 Wings and Wheels, Inc. began in 1999 by a group of aircraft and automotive enthusiasts. Our goal was to build and operate a "living museum" of airplanes and automobiles which would not only grace the museum floor, but would provide actual demonstrations for our visitors. Our museum will have a large hanger type building to house our "living museum" and it will include a theater, gift shop, restaurant, and conference facilities. It will also feature a motor sports park with a drag strip, a car show area and an airstrip for flight demonstrations and/or for any visitors who have chosen to fly in.

Some of the events that we have been involved in are the:
Kingman Air and Auto Show
Route 66 Fun Run
Kingman Street Drags
Hot Rod Power Tour
The Great American Race
The Kingman Air and Auto Show has grown into a popular community event. Since 1996, a drag race exhibition has been part of the show. This racing showcase has entertained the fans with jet dragsters, wheel-standers, funny cars and drivers of many legal and race vehicles. This part of the show has been conducted by volunteers from Route 66 Wings and Wheels which provided both racers and race crew.

The Route 66 Fun Run is another popular event. The Wings and Wheels organization hosted the first ever Kingman Street Drags during the 2001 Route 66 Fun Run. This event was held May 5th on a closed off city street. A 300 foot drag strip was set-up, and it played host to nearly 100 racers and 3000 spectators. This years event was even more spectacular with the 1/8th mile drag strip incorporating part of the Kingman Airport.

Four days after the Fun Run in 2001, the Route 66 Wings and Wheels organization played host to the Hot Rod Power Tour. This is a group of over 1000 cross country cruisers. These "Long Haulers" were on a tour that started in Pontiac Michigan and was scheduled to end in San Bernardino, California. The eighth stop on their tour was in Kingman. While in Kingman, the participants in this traveling car show stopped, stretched their legs and enjoyed the beautiful weather and scenery while taking part in the Power Tour festivities. The Wings and Wheels organization provided a barbecue and beverage tent, furnished a live band and provided the parking and security crew.

In June 2001, the Great American Race came through Kingman, and the Route 66 Wings and Wheels organization was a proud car sponsor.
