Howard County Indiana Genealogical Society

The Howard County Genealogical Society was founded in 1972 as the Genealogy and Local History Club of Howard County. Among its stated goals are to preserve and disseminate genealogical materials for Howard County, as well as to provide a community in which researchers can expand their knowledge of genealogy and research techniques. HCGS Constitution and Bylaws (revised May 2005).

For nearly 30 years, the Society has held and attended numerous workshops, made field trips to Ft. Wayne and Salt Lake City, as well as produced several publications.

Society members assist genealogists researching their roots in Howard County by answering queries, volunteering in the library and by publishing materials to make them available to the larger genealogical community.

The society's most recent project is Crown Point Cemetery Interments 1868-2005, published Spring 2006. This softcover, comb-bound, 600-page book contains an index to all known burials in Crown Point Cemetery, Kokomo, Indiana. This index is arranged alphabetically and includes date of birth (if known), date of death, date of burial, age (if known) whether the individual has a headstone, as well as the section and lot numbers. Also included is a history of Crown Point Cemetery, plat maps of the Cemetery, information on cemetery art and symbols, color photographs of some of the more interesting monuments and a listing of all the Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery. It is available for $30.00 at the Main Branch of the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library (200 N Union Street, Kokomo IN, 46901) or via US mail for an additional $5.00 shipping and handling. Send a check or money order to the Society address above to order.

The Society has grown to over 100 members throughout the United States with an average monthly meeting attendance of 15-20 members. Visitors are always welcome! A yearly membership is available for $15.00, which includes the quarterly newsletter. You do not need to have roots in Howard County to join.
