Who We Are

For years, the motto of the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has been:
In essentials, unity
In opinions, liberty
In all things, charity
This sums up the doctrinal stance of our church.

We believe that ALL Christians are on a journey of faith. We are united by our belief that God has come to us in a special way in Jesus Christ. Other than this, we hold to no other formal set of doctrinal statements. We honor each person's spiritual quest and encourage all people to seriously seek out God in all things. We respect the traditions of the Christian faith and strive for Christian unity between all believers. As a sign of Christian unity, we share the Common Meal each week as part of our worship.

The organization and history of First Christian Church runs concurrently with the founding and growth of the city of Sedalia, which was established in Oct., 1860. The church was organized in May, 1861, and met in a store building just north of the Mo. Pacific Railroad Station for some five years. In 1866, a House of Worship was built on the northeast corner of 6th and Massachusetts, serving the growing congregation for 22 years. In memory of Gen. George R. Smith, a charter member of this church, ground was given by his family for the site of a new church building at 7th and Mass. This building was completed in 1889. An Educational Annex was added in 1924. When repairs to the 75 year old building were becoming exorbitant, the present edifice was constructed. It was dedicated in April, 1964. The cornerstone slabs from the two former church buildings were placed in the Memorial Tower. Mementoes from the second church building beautify our Prayer Chapel and Library. 5 of the 14 large stained glass windows and 2 small oak pews continue to add beauty to this building.
