Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Miné Okubo
Saturday, January 27, 1:00-3:00 p.m., Downtown Library

Join us to discover three groundbreaking Japanese American artists who worked from the 1920s through the 1990s: Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Miné Okubo.

Pictures of Belonging is a book and also a national art exhibit of the same name. Our program, which offers a broad portrait of Japanese American experience in the 20th century, will be presented by ShiPu Wang, who wrote the book and curated the exhibit.

All the artists have Bay Area ties. Hisako Hibi, seen in the photo teaching painting at Tanforan Assembly Center, lived in Hayward before being incarcerated at Tanforan. The artists also share powerful connections with one another.

Professor Wang holds the Coats Family Chair in the Arts at the University of California, Merced. The Pictures of Belonging art exhibit will tour locations including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Monterey Museum of Art.

Copies of the Pictures of Belonging book will be available for purchase at this event, with proceeds benefiting the Hayward Area Historical Society and Hayward Public Library. Professor Wang will sign books.

Registration requested. Refreshments will be provided by Eden Township JACL.
