Festival Mozaic is an annual celebration of music that takes place on California's beautiful Central Coast in San Luis Obispo County.  The Festival consists of chamber music concerts, orchestra performances, crossover and popular artists, Notable Encounter dinners and educational events, and free community events including mini-concerts, family concerts, master classes, lectures, and open rehearsals.  Festival artists are the best in their field and come to San Luis Obispo from all over the world.

Saturday July 23, 2022
7:30 pm: Baroque in the Vines
The 2022 Festival kicks off with a beautiful evening of Baroque music at the picturesque setting of Serra Chapel and featuring a concerto performance by Mozaic Artist-in-Residence Abigel Kralik.

The grounds open at 6:00pm for picnics and enjoying the view. Shuttles from the parking lot will begin operating at 6:00 p.m. Picnics will be available for preorder from SLO Provisions or you may bring your own. Beer, wine and light snacks will also be available for purchase. Water is allowed on the tile patio, but all other food and drinks must be consumed off of the tile.

10:00 am: Claiborne & Churchill: Spectrum of Pinot Noir Tasting & Brunch
Join our friends at Claiborne & Churchill for an exclusive "Spectrum of Pinot Noir" tasting event for Festival Mozaic patrons.  At this special event you will be guided through several tastings of various pinot noirs, including a pinot noir blanc, rose of pinot noir, and others. This event will also include a light brunch by Haute Skillet featuring a Quiche Lorraine, summer salad, and fresh fruit.

2:00 pm: Kinsey Lee
Festival Mozaic is excited to welcome singer/songwriter Kinsey Lee to the Central Coast. Over the last 10 years Kinsey Lee has been writing, touring, and performing with collaborative band, The Wild Reeds. Working through quarantine, spinning Carole King records and reading Carole's memoir, a solo project was born. These songs and performances are pieces of modern folk music at its best. Kinsey's raw vocals are kindred to Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, and Brandi Carlile.

7:30 pm: Christian McBride
Bassist Christian McBride is one of the most in-demand jazz musicians of his generation. An eight-time Grammy award-winner, McBride consistently combines his deft musicianship with an innate ability to communicate his enthusiasm to an audience. He originally attended Juilliard to study classical music, but soon was recruited to a touring jazz combo that launched his career. He has performed on over 200 recordings and has collaborated with varied musical legends including Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, James Brown, Kathleen Battle, and Edgar Meyer.

Monday July 25, 2022
11:00 am: Family Concert: Carnival of the Animals
Join Scott Yoo, the Festival Mozaic Orchestra, and the Movement Arts Collective for a family friendly performance of Carnival of the Animals with live dance and narration by San Luis Obispo's Hometown Radio host Dave Congalton.  This program will last under one hour without an intermission.

Come early and try playing different musical instruments at the Instrument Petting Zoo in front of the CPAC starting at 10:00 AM, presented by the San Luis Obispo Symphony.

Festival Mozaic is proud to partner with the SLO Film Festival to present screenings of two films during the 2022 Summer Festival.

Academy Award-nominated director Scott Hicks (“Shine”) documents an eventful year in the career and personal life of distinguished Western classical composer Philip Glass as he interacts with a number of friends and collaborators, who include Chuck Close, Ravi Shankar, and Martin Scorsese.

5:30 pm: Notable Encounter Dinner: Mozart Viola Quintet
Scott Yoo hosts a musical and culinary adventure! Join him and the Festival artists for an exploration of Mozart's G minor Viola Quintet, which includes a string quartet plus an extra viola! Throughout the evening you will learn about the composer, hear performances of some selections, and gain insight into the piece. The evening will conclude with a gourmet plated dinner by Cass Winery Executive Chef Charlie Wayne, complete with wines from Cass Winery.

10:00 am: Cass Winery: Blending Seminar
Join Steve Cass of CASS Winery for a fun and exclusive Festival of Mozaic wine blending class that includes a little competition and challenge. It's your chance to make the best wine blend from our estate varietals. But beware... the competition is fierce, as each table is tasked with creating a blend to submit for a blind tasting and all the guests are invited to judge their favorites. The team that receives the most votes will be named 2022 BLENDING CHAMPS and win a prize! But in true CASS fashion, it's all in good fun!

12:00 pm: Midday Mini-Concert: Festival Brass
The Festival Brass Quintet leads a free midday concert featuring exciting and celebratory pieces for brass instruments.  The repertoire is to be announced.

Reservations for these free events are required. There is a suggested donation of $10 per reservation.  Seating is not provided at this outdoor event - you may bring your own folding chairs or a blanket.

11:00 am: Notable Insight: Franck Piano Quintet
Join music director Scott Yoo for a look behind the score of Franck's Piano Quintet. Scott and the artists will take you on an exploration into the music by Franck, discussing details of the composer's life, musical elements to listen for, and offer their own perspectives on the piece.

2:00 pm: Conversational Retrospective of the Festival
Cal Poly professor and local musicologist Dr. Craig Russell will lead this interactive lecture event which will feature a conversation with Mozart Festival founder Clifton Swanson.

In addition to his teaching career, Dr. Craig Russell is a co-host of KCBX in Concert which airs Wednesdays on KCBX Central Coast Radio.  He was a staff musicologist for the Mozart Festival for over a decade leading lecture series and a series of concerts for young people called "Ear Opener Concerts."

The founding music director of the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival (now Festival Mozaic), Clifton Swanson has played a major role in the San Luis Obispo music scene. He joined the Cal Poly music department faculty in 1967 where he originally taught music appreciation and music history. He soon assumed responsibility for Cal Poly’s Symphony Orchestra and founded and conducted the Cal Poly Chamber Orchestra. He was also the music director and conductor of the San Luis Obispo Symphony from 1971 to 1984. He was elected the Cal Poly Music Department chair in 1983, and served in that role almost continuously until his retirement in 2004.

1:30 pm: Film Presentation "The Quest for Tonewood"
Festival Mozaic is proud to partner with the SLO Film Festival to present screenings of two films during the 2022 Summer Festival.

The Quest for Tonewood: A luthier is obsessed with the idea of crafting a violin, the sound of which is so exceptional that it will thrill the musician who plays it and caress the souls of those who hear it. This will require a special type of wood, cut from a hallowed tree that is only found in a Balkan forest. A musical quest that is as thrilling as a high-stakes treasure hunt.

9:30 pm: Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is an American composer, performer and producer, originally from Orcas Island and currently based in Los Angeles. After several self-released albums, Smith was signed to independent record label Western Vinyl in 2015, who released her first official album, Euclid, in January 2015. Her latest album, Tides: Music for the Meditation and Yoga, was released in January 2019.

Smith grew up and was home-educated on Orcas Island, Northwestern Washington. She left the island to study composition and sound engineering at Berklee College of Music in Boston, before returning to the island after her graduation. It was after returning home that Smith discovered synthesizers, when a neighbor introduced her to the Buchla 100 Synthesizer. Having originally intended to use her voice as her primary instrument, and then moving to classical guitar and piano, Smith switched to the use of synthesizer after being lent and experimenting with the Buchla 100 for a year.

2:00 pm: Free Violin Master Class: Sharon Roffman
Join the Guest Concertmaster of the Festival Mozaic Orchestra, Sharon Roffman, for a free master class for local musicians.  Roffman is currently the Leader/Concertmaster of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Glasgow, Scotland.

Master classes are great opportunities for young musicians, in which a professional teacher or "master" listens to the student perform and offers feedback on their performance, suggestions for practice and improvement, and new musical ideas to try.

This event is free and open to the public, no tickets are required.
