Street Dept Repairs Salt Box in Prep for Winter Weather

The Street Department was repairing the salt spreader box in preparation for the wintery mix this week. Pictured from left to right is David Mailhos, Ronnie Kolacek, and Darrell Moore. The Street Department was able to salt many of the main intersections and the higher traffic areas in the city on Tuesday in anticipation of the ice and snow that was highly forecasted. As a department we can always expect and prepare for the worse and hope for the best.

Council Meets for Special Called Meeting

The Seymour City Council met for a special called meeting on Tuesday, January 31st, 2023, at 12:00 PM to approve Resolution 1540 authorizing the preparing and submission of a grant with the office of the governor, public safety office, criminal division for four rifle resistant vest and associated components. With the addition of a fourth police officer the department needed one additional bullet proof vest. Through the office of the Governor of Texas a grant was available to upgrade the quality of vests to rifle resistant vests. Chief Griffin believes it is a priority to ensure his department is equipped with the proper equipment to optimize the safety of each officer.

The value of the grant is $8,027.00 which would cover one hundred percent of the protective vest for each City of Seymour Police Officer. The Public Safety Office (PSO) requires that the policy on usage of vests or plates include mandatory training on the proper care, fitting, inspection, use, storage, and maintenance of the armor. PSO also requires the policy specify that body armor may not be left in patrol vehicles when an officer is not on duty in order to minimize the heat damage to the armor.

Department Reports

The Street Department as reported by Supervisor Ronnie Kolacek reported the Street Department’s primary focus this week was to repair and prepare the city’s equipment so that it could be utilized to clear snow/ice and to spread salt on the high traveled roads and intersections to ensure the safety of our community.

City of Seymour Police Department Sargeant Bryce Sawyer reported the department assisted with a child custody dispute, responded to two disturbance calls, and made school visits. The cold weather kept folks inside minimizing the mischief in town.

Over the course of the last week, the Reverse Osmosis Plant under the supervision of John Davis produced 3.4 million gallons of treated water that was distributed to the City of Seymour and Baylor County Special Utility District. During the week plant operators monitored the chlorine levels at points throughout the distribution system, monitored the amount of wastewater discharged from the plant, finished preparing the Water Conservation Plan for council review, and completed the end-of-month reports for TCEQ.

The City of Seymour Electric Department under the supervision of Anthony Arjes reported there were no power outages during this week’s frigid temperatures. During the cold weather the department maintained the fleet, prepared vehicles, equipment, and materials for the anticipated ice storm. The Electric Department inspected circuit two to conduct visual check of the circuit, assisted the Street Department in installing a dump bed cover for the chipper, assisted the Street Department in chipping limbs, repaired a cross arm brace and two streetlights.

The Water Department supervisor Chase Hoyt reported they repaired two meter leaks and reset a meter can. Water Department employees John Smajstrla and Dakota Berkley completed a water licensing class in preparation for state approved licenses and still had time to rod out two sewer mains.
