As Dorothy awoke from her unconscious dream of Oz, we delighted in her realization that she already possessed every quality she ever needed to overcome her obstacles and misadventures: courage, intelligence, love and a house full of friends. Tom Wilson did not wait till the end of his all too short story to appreciate and draw strength from all the people and talents he had. Perhaps it was this self-awareness that drew Wilson back to the beach villages of his childhood in southern Delaware. Perhaps it was this self-awareness that caused other people to fall so deeply in love with him.

With New York and Paris calling, Wilson chose instead Sussex County’s then sleepy beach towns to fuel his true passion - painting. Leaving behind the world of high fashion, Wilson embraced the fields of grain, sun-bleached buildings, thrift stores and the diversity of local characters. His community was deeply flattered by his radiant attention. Wilson’s return to Delaware is when his story really began. The artwork he produced from 1980 till his death in 1995 due to complications of the AIDS virus, is a startling aesthetic achievement. His artistic vision is a collage of the places, people and relationships that framed a little-remarked but impressive life.
